The Fit 50 – No.10 Climb 100 Flights of Stairs

50 Fitness challenges to shake up your fitness journey.

How many can you do?

No.10 Climb 100 Flights of Stairs

Another test of endurance and fitness. The vertical mile in a way, in name only not actual distance. The vertical distance is probably more like 400 meters depending on the stairs you take.

The number of steps will also vary from 1000 to 2000 vertical steps. It is not really an accurate measure to compare to others. It is just a challenge for yourself. The perfect way to complete this challenge is to run to the top, non-stop. For this you need a very tall building of 100 stories, which are quite difficult to come by, especially ones that allow you to run them. So maybe it is more realistic to break it up.

As with many of these challenges it becomes a mental test quickly. You know your body can climb one flight of stairs so why not 100? Your mind will give up before your body, don’t let it.

My experience – For this challenge I used a ten-story building and repeated it ten times, this also included going down the stairs for added challenge. Running after a while for me just wasn’t an option, it was a trudge towards the end. Successfully completed but with cramping calves in just under an hour. By no means a record pace but an alternate fitness challenge that is very accessible, especially to those living in cities.

Fun Fact – Stair climbing is a competitive sport called – Tower running. It takes place all over the world including the Empire State Building

Elite Challenge – The Vertical Kilometer – Probably 250 flights of stairs depending on the building.

Alternate Test – Enter a Tower running event

Fit Fifty Challenge – Climb 100 flights of stairs.
